Agrimony, Crone of the Dying Strands
Agrimony, Crone of the Dying Strands
The Crone of the Dying Strands seethes within her containment vessel, a spirit of pure resentment and bile, her existence brightened only when she can emerge to inflict suffering and death. Agrimony has no choice but to serve the will of the undying Captain Rengrave of the Atramentous. She brings down black curses on the heads of any enemy upon which she is unleashed, knowing all the while that the true subject of her animosity is forever beyond her reach. Agrimony once lived in isolation on a small island along the Dying Strands, a channel west of Garlghast. At her fingertips were powers of dark ritual and profane magic, rooted in the old, bloodthirsty customs of those trying to survive in this fog-shrouded region. The living pirates of nearby islands learned to give her a wide berth after she made examples of those who trespassed without her permission, and soon she was offered tributes from their plunder as superstitious appeasement. Those who defied her were cursed with black fortune. Slowly she amassed considerable wealth and influence, but unfortunately her reputation reached the ears of Captain Rengrave. It may be that Rengrave first investigated the Crone of the Dying Strands to determine if she was a threat to the lich lords, for she existed outside their influence, even if she did not directly defy them. Her sway over the pirates of these isles threatened the control of others, such as Axiara Wraithblade, yet it would seem the revenant captain was intrigued by Agrimony’s unusual rituals and primal magic. Though he could have annihilated her for her impertinence, he instead considered how she might make a useful addition to his own fleet and crew. First, Rengrave put the witch’s duplicity to a test. He offered Agrimony several artifacts plucked from ruins under Drer Drakkerung. In return, he demanded the witch destroy an impertinent leader among the pirate raiders who had been speaking ill of the Ghost Fleet and of Rengrave in particular. Agrimony accepted Rengrave’s gifts and agreed to the task but immediately began plotting against him. Not understanding Rengrave’s nature and thinking his ship was the root of his power, Agrimony allied with the self-appointed pirate admiral whom Rengrave had tasked her to kill. She convinced the mortal he would be capable of overthrowing Cryx’s first citizen, promising he could take Rengrave’s place, though the Atramentous and its black power would be hers alone. When Rengrave next sailed, the seas surged and fought against him. Storms carrying the crone’s mocking laughter lashed the cinder ship and filled the sails of the renegade pirate’s fleet. It was a brave if foolish effort, one which demonstrated the extent of Agrimony’s mystical power. But she underestimated the revenants and did not comprehend how the ancient ghost ship was forever linked by Toruk’s balefire to Rengrave, its master. Rengrave eradicated the mortal ships that had sailed against him and boarded the one bearing Agrimony, who quickly found herself the last living creature walking its deck. When she realized her folly and begged for mercy, he gave her his final gift: a bottle from his cabin that had been a legacy of its previous captain, when the Atramentous was a dirgenmast ship. This accursed decanter had been steeped in Toruk’s blight and fire, giving it a thirst for souls. Opening the stopper, Rengrave tore Agrimony’s soul from her flesh and captured her essence within the bottle. Now, enraged but unrepentant, Agrimony seethes inside. Each day that passes for her there feels like a hundred. Though her rage is undiminished, she is bound to Rengrave’s will and must kill those he sends her against, forced to do what she once refused. She is summoned when he needs her black gifts, then returned again to her loathsome prison, howling all the while.
